Role of Direct Instruction in CLA?

Updated: Nov 9

Question: By practicing CLA, are we playing the role of a facilitator more than direct instruction and feedback?

Response: There is no problem adopting direct instructions as a way to systematically give instructions, make assessments, and provide feedback. However, it is important to consider the impact of the things we say which may be construed as added informational constraints that could shape the way students explore. Similarly, the kind of demonstration we choose to do or not, can also affect the way students explore.

And likewise, the kind of feedback we give can also direct learners attention towards certain information and will therefore, affect the exploration process. So, instead of directing them towards one singular solution, help direct their attention towards information that matters, information that may potentially help them explore within a slightly narrower perceptual-motor landscape. In terms of assessment, I think it is important to define what learning is about from the perspectives of CLA. It is also important to consider what is the definition of an "expert" mover from a CLA perspective, and therefore in a nutshell, measures and evidences that point towards adaptability and flexibility should be foregrounded and prioritised.
